What happens to a dream deferred?

      Does it dry up

      like a raisin in the sun?

      Or fester like a sore—

      And then run?

      Does it stink like rotten meat?

      Or crust and sugar over—

      like a syrupy sweet?

      Maybe it just sags

      like a heavy load.

      Or does it explode?

Our favorite interpretation of Langston Hughes' poem "Harlem" (or "A Dream Deferred")  is to view it as a call to activism. The poem's exploration of the consequences of deferred dreams are a rallying cry for social and political change, particularly in addressing issues of racial injustice and inequality.

There is a cost to human inaction and complacency. Activism is the antidote. This pendant is a reminder that whether you are standing against genocide, doing racial justice work, LGBTQ advocacy, environmental activism, or something else – your actions are important. Rest when you need to, but keep going.
